Inspired by his own family's experience with childhood leukemia (his daughter was diagnosed in July of 2012), Boston's ALASTAIR MOOCK has assembled a new collection of sing-a-longs - SINGING OUR WAY THROUGH: SONGS FOR THE WORLD'S BRAVEST KIDS. The crowdfunded album has raised over $27K-to-date, blasting it's way past the initial goal of $10K that will be used to benefit children's hospitals and childhood oncology programs (Alastair has already donated to Boston Children's Hospital and the Hole-in-the-Wall Gang camp in CT).
I can't believe I'm already writing about June releases (Finn will be a year old already), but JOANIE LEEDS & THE NIGHTLIGHTS have staked June 25 for the release of their new album, BANDWAGON. Produced by Dean Jones, the 1990s Puff Daddy of the kids music scene these days (all up on everyone's album and/or track), BANDWAGON will also feature appearances by Justin Lansing of recent GRAMMY winners, THE OKEE DOKEE BROTHERS, Rachel Loshak of the GUSTAFER YELLOWGOLD crew, and folkster Jonatha Brooke.
Minneapolis-based singer/songwriter PAUL SPRING takes a break from his "grown-up" music on HOME OF SONG, his first full-length entry into the family music realm. Produced by the all-over-everything Dean Jones of DOG ON FLEAS and Joe Mailander of recent GRAMMY winners THE OKEE DOKEE BROTHERS, HOME OF SONG hits stores this week, perfectly-timed with the "official" calendar arrival of Spring. I just wish it felt like Spring, as it's 27 degrees here at Rock Father HQ.
For my friends and readers in Los Angeles, you have an opportunity to catch all five 2013 GRAMMY Nominees in the Children's category as they perform together at the Children’s GRAMMY Nominee Family Concert on February 9. GRAMMY winners Cathy Fink and Marcy Marxer will emcee the show, which will kick-off at 11am.
Now in it's seventh year, the annual Fids & Kamily Music Awards have become a traditional celebration of the best in kids & family music. Inspired by the Village Voice's long-running "Pazz & Jop" Music Poll, Fids & Kamily gathers it's data from a variety of rock n' roll gangsters folks that are connected to family music in some fashion or another - bloggers, writers, radio personalities, and more. For the first time, The Rock Father is represented in the poll, as I was recently invited to become one of this year's 26 judges. So who were the best of the best? Find out below...
As we count down the days until the official end of Summer (I'm moving into Fall already, but more on that later), my friend Beth Blenz-Clucas of Sugar Mountain PR put together a compilation of family-friendly songs that are perfect for A Late Summer Road Trip... or just rockin' out around the house. You can stream the 11-song set via the Soundcloud player below. Check it out!
