Father's Day is less than a week away, and in the spirit of this day (and month) of Dads, The Rock Father and 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment are giving you a chance to score a special bundle of some classic films that have just been released on Blu-Ray for the very first time. One lucky reader will score the VIVA ZAPATA! (Marlon Brando), THE VERDICT (Paul Newman), and BRUBAKER (Robert Redford). Full details below...
The ten-year-old version of me is very disappointed. A new G.I. JOE movie came out this year, and I haven't seen it. Sure, I wasn't a big fan of the first live-action 'Joe flick (I had better adventures playing with my old Hasbro action figures in the backyard 30 years ago), but the previews I'd seen for the new one looked pretty good. If you missed it on the big screen as did I, this July you can catch up when G.I. JOE: RETALIATION comes home. The film will hit Blu-ray, Blu-ray 3D, DVD and On Demand July 30, 2013 from Paramount Home Media Distribution, with a digital release two weeks early on July 16 th. Full specs on each release hit Rock Father HQ this evening, and all can be found below.
The 1996 film THAT THING YOU DO! is one of a select group of movies (STAR WARS, THE BLUES BROTHERS, BACK TO THE FUTURE, etc.) that I've re-purchased several times throughout the years. I had it on VHS... then DVD... then "Extended Edition" DVD... and now, the Tom Hanks written/directed comedy is coming to Blu-ray (out April 2 via Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment). Rated PG, you could toss around whether or not it's a "family" film, but I say go for it. Hanks is a true music-lover, and THAT THING YOU DO! is a testament to that. I'm surprised they didn't just wait three years to do a "20th Anniversary" release. Has it really been 17 years already?
On December 4, 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment will release BEASTS OF THE SOUTHERN WILD on Blu-Ray and DVD. At the center of the story is the relationship between a Father and his Daughter - and the wisdom passed on from Father to Child. In the spirit of the film, The Rock Father is giving readers a chance to win a copy of the film on Blu-Ray by sharing either a life lesson that they've learned from their Dad, or a life lesson that they've passed along to their kids.
I still remember seeing Steven Spielberg's E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial for the first time. It was the first movie that really hit me as capturing the reality of being a kid in 1982. The little STAR WARS references, the whole Halloween sequence - it all seemed so real to me. By the time I had a red BMX bike, I used to pretend that I was Elliott, about to lift off from the ground and fly toward the moon. As an adult, I've owned that movie several times, and it's hard to believe that it was 10 years ago that I purchased the 20th Anniversary Edition DVD set - much less that it's been 30 years since the film hit screens. In fact I showed my daughter the film for the first time last year (she LOVES it), and I still have an E.T. statue in my office. Well, today Universal Studios hit The Rock Father with a press release announcing that the original, non-altered 1982 film will come to Blu-ray this October. They've included a trailer and some photos, so let's take a look at all of it.
