Quantcast

As I sit in my office working tonight, I can hear the GRAMMY telecast faintly emitting from the TV in the family room. I have no idea what's happening, but I do know that the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences got two things right tonight - GHOST took home their first GRAMMY, winning "Best Metal Performance" with "Cirice"; and Tim Kubart snagged his first statue as well, winning "Best Children's Album" with HOME. Sure, it's two completely opposite ends of the spectrum, but they're the ones I ride most! On one hand, you have a host of Sprout's SUNNY SIDE UP SHOW, and on the other... the act that's brought The Dark Lord back to the pop charts in a way we haven't seen in years. It's a win-win.

When it comes to spooky music that's perfect for Halloween, but not really intended for Halloween, I have a bunch of go-to bands for the season.  SLAYER is a big Fall favorite, as are THE BIRTHDAY MASSACRE, ROB ZOMBIE, ALICE COOPER, etc. They're bands that have a certain "vibe" about them that fits - and they're all completely different from one another, yet still utterly perfect. The latest to fill that niche is one of my favorite contemporary acts, GHOST. This Swedish act seemingly rose from nowhere to become an increasingly recognized name - with a "Satanic" image both creepy and nonthreatening at the same time, putting forth three albums of excellence over the course of the past five years. Fronted by the Pope-esque Papa Emeritus on OPUS EPONYMOUS (2010), Papa Emeritus II on INFESTISSUMAM (2013) and the current Papa Emeritus III on 2015's MELIORA, GHOST, their mainstream infiltration found them debuting at #8 on the Billboard Top 200 last month with the release of their latest album. Indeed, an audience is listening... and if you're not, it's time to start. GHOST secures a place here in my annual 31 Days of Halloween on THE ROCK FATHER Magazine.

Listen to a GHOST Bonus Track called "Zenith"

It's not secret that GHOST's MELIORA is one of my favorite albums of 2015, and today I'm sharing a bonus track that's new to me, and possibly new to you (despite appearing on YouTube last month). "Zenith" is available on select vinyl releases of MELIORA, and thus far has not received an official digital release. There's several videos and streams floating around out there, many of which claim to be "better" quality, but from what I can tell based on some of the trademark vinyl "hiss" and "pop" present in all of them - they seem to come from the same source. To me, the analog vibe adds to the mystic of this one - a track that sounds both vintage and modern at once. Have a listen...

According to The Rock Daughters, who are just three and six, GHOST's "From The Pinnacle to The Pit" is a song that "sounds like SCOOBY-DOO." Perhaps it's the spooky nature, or even that lead melody, but whatever the reason, the girls have told Mommy and Daddy their feelings on this song many times already. Now that their third album, MELIORA has made its way into the world, the video for "From The Pinnacle to The Pit" has been released, news of which arrived via email from the Clergy this morning. Do you doubt the mass appeal of GHOST? I recently wore a GHOST t-shirt my my youngest daughter's pre-school and one of their little friends yelled to me "that GHOST shirt is awesome!," and later told his father that he wishes "to be Papa Emeritus III for Halloween." I kid you not.

GHOST is doing what most bands can never do - they get better with each album. They spread their blackened wings and broaden their sonic horizons. They've become perhaps my favorite current band, their third album set for release this Friday, but streaming in full below. MELIORA is exactly what I'd hoped for and more - a breathtakingly majestic collection of songs layered with beauty and weight... and placing the sinister delight in plain sight. Crank MELIORA below, and get your pre-orders in now via Amazon.

Listen to the "Majesty" of GHOST...

Now this is a great way to kick-off a Friday! After getting repeated compliments online and off yesterday for my GHOST t-shirt, this day has begun with an email alerting me to the release of "Majesty" - the latest single to come forth from MELIORA, the third album by GHOST. There's some melodies and tone in here that make this one feel like a sonic sequel to "Cirice," and that's certainly not a bad thing. Papa Emeritus III and The Nameless Ghouls will release their new record on August 21st via Loma Vista Recordings.  Listen to "Majesty" below...
