George Lucas' STRANGE MAGIC (DVD Review)

STRANGE MAGIC is a strange film. Not just the movie itself - a musical fantasy inspired by William Shakespeare's A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM - but nearly everything surrounding its release. It's a Disney film, yet it's not - the first film from George Lucas to follow the sale of Lucasfilm to The Walt Disney Studios, but released through Disney's sometimes-used Touchstone Pictures label. It's a Lucas film, yet it's not - with the STAR WARS creator getting a "story by" credit, but screenplay and directorial duties falling on others, most notably Gary Rydstrom, a Skywalker Sound Designer whose credits include WRECK-IT RALPH, FINDING NEMO and TOY STORY. When I first covered the film here on THE ROCK FATHER last November, I commented on how the marketing was sorta old-school in that it came out of nowhere - and it looked really cool. But when the film came-and-went in January with little fanfare, I (like many) missed it until the DVD release in May - a 2015 home video release with no Blu-ray. Again, very strange, indeed.

When Lucasfilm released STRANGE MAGIC (via Disney/Touchstone) this past January, it didn't exactly set the box office on fire, which on one hand is surprising given it's "from the mind of" STAR WARS creator George Lucas, but on the other is to be expected of a movie that seemingly came from out of nowhere. While audiences have not yet discovered the musical fairy tale, that could change on May 19th when Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment brings the film home on DVD and Digital HD. Yes, you read that correctly... as of now, no Blu-ray has been announced.

THE ROCK FATHER's 2015 Movie Preview showcases select titles heading to theaters this year, as provided to us by studio representatives.

STRANGE MAGIC, a new animated film from Lucasfilm Ltd., is a madcap fairy tale musical inspired by “A Midsummer Night's Dream.” Popular songs from the past six decades help tell the tale of a colorful cast of goblins, elves, fairies and imps, and their hilarious misadventures sparked by the battle over a powerful potion. Lucasfilm Animation Singapore and Industrial Light & Magic bring to life the fanciful forest turned upside down with world-class animation and visual effects. STRANGE MAGIC is Directed by Gary Rydstrom (“Toy Story Toons: Hawaiian Vacation,” “Lifted”) from a story by George Lucas.
