For all the Portal Masters out there, the fourth installment of Activision's smash hit SKYLANDERS has been officially announced. On October 5, 2014, SKYLANDERS TRAP TEAM "will reverse the magic of bringing toys to life - incredibly letting kids pull characters out of the digital world into the physical world." The game was officially announced earlier this evening, and an email hit my inbox with the first trailer, the announcement, and the pre-order details. Check 'em all out below, right here on THE ROCK FATHER...
If you follow me on Instagram (and I sure hope you do), you might've caught a glimpse of Flynn's Rescue Ship back on October 22 when we did our build. Part of MEGA Bloks' SKYLANDERS collection of building sets (recommended for kids 5+), Flynn and the gang come from Activision's recently-released video game SKYLANDERS SWAP FORCE, which follows last year's SKYLANDERS GIANTS. While the game series has become a pop culture staple, the building category continues to grow alongside it, and the folks at MEGA Bloks have some incredible sets inspired by that world. Having already reviewed the SKYLANDERS GIANTS Arkeyan Robot King earlier this Fall, we were excited when MEGA Brands hit us with some fresh stock to review. After detailed evaluation here at Rock Father HQ, this collection lands firmly in my 2013 Holiday Gift Guide.
The world of SKYLANDERS is massive... especially for those that are actively immersed in the popular games from Activision and their associated collectible figurines that have crossed over into the toy aisle. From a financial standpoint, I'm lucky that SKYLANDERS hasn't caught on here at Rock Father HQ, despite my reviewing SPYRO'S ADVENTURE, the first game in the series back in 2011. Aside from that game and a couple of Happy Meal Toys that infiltrated our home at some point, we'd been largely SKYLANDERS-free until the folks at MEGA Bloks sent over their new ARKEYAN ROBOT KING Building Set for review in The Rock Father's State-of-the-Art Toy Testing Facility (our house and yard). A little preview of things to come since SKYLANDERS: SWAP FORCE is being released this Fall?
When the news officially hit this afternoon that Disney Interactive and Avalanche Software would be entering the cross-platform realm currently dominated by SKYLANDERS with the launch of Disney INFINITY this summer, I jumped on that trailer immediately. My first reaction? This multi-platform adventure looks FANTASTIC. My second reaction? Buying all the physical figures to intermix with the digital world looks EXPENSIVE.
Skylanders Giants (XBOX 360, PS3, Wii, Wii U)
In 2011, Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure was a surprise hit that became a massive phenomenon. Now, the Skylanders are back for another cross-platform adventure in SKYLANDERS GIANTS. With a new story, a ton of new characters, and yes, loads of new toys. Genius marketing to tie the video game into physical toys, but also a fantastic play experience.
Pop-Up stores are becoming much more commonplace these days, and for the holidays, GameStop is getting in on the action. The video game retailer is launching 80 GameStop Kids locations (click here for the full list) across the U.S. featuring an assortment of this season’s "most sought after video games and accessories, video game licensed products, popular toy brands and collectibles."
