Earlier this morning, visitors to the ShopDisney website (an affiliate) started seeing an advertisement for something interesting on the "New" page. Disney Store's TOYBOX action figures are touted as making their debut in-store and online on Friday, November 3, 2017. "Get ready to interact with PIXAR, Star Wars and Marvel characters like never before," it says. With no formal announcement yet, what's particularly notable is that the two figures featured are of Rey and a First Order Stormtrooper from Star Wars: The Last Jedi... but that they're styled almost exactly like their video game counterparts where in the long-shuttered Disney Infinity. Here at our house, the figures from that game are still in-use, and just yesterday our youngest daughter was playing with the Star Wars ones. There's a huge appeal in those designs.
It's a bummer that seemingly came out of nowhere this afternoon, the news that Disney is exiting the video games publishing business and shutting down Disney Infinity following the upcoming release of figures from ALICE THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS and FINDING DORY. Shocking as it may seem, I can't say I'm terribly surprised, as the hints of a crash have been coming - the "toys-to-life" gaming category having already peaked, its shelf life already dwindling. We've seen this before, with trends like music gaming dominating retail aisles with massive interactive displays and an ever-growing array of hardware, games and accessories. Eventually, consumer overload takes place, retailers get tired, and interest eventually plummets no matter how good the latest game in the series is. The biggest problem with games and toys and merchandising in general is pretty simple: there's just too much stuff available. We'll swing back to that in a minute, though...
On the first-ever episode of Disney Infinity NEXT, the makers of Disney Infinity 3.0 made a promise that the lifecycle of the 3.0 Starter Packs would be extended, and that there will be more content than ever coming to Disney Infinity this year. Just-announced is the MARVEL Battlegrounds Play Set (out March 15), which brings the brawling genre into Disney Infinity for the very first time. All that and more can be seen in the Spring 2016 edition of Disney Infinity NEXT...
