They say that history repeats itself, and likewise so do trends. One trend in play that's back with some serious bite this year is everything jurassic.  Yes, the dinosaurs are back, and at the forefront of popular culture that's being driven by the release of Universal Pictures' Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom.  While they might own the rights to certain stories, names and places, Universal can't lay claim to dinosaurs, and that keeps the gates wide-open for other toymakers to ride the wave of renewed excitement for the long-extinct (or are they?) giants that have been captivating imaginations for millions of years. For Playmobil, The Explorers are their new line of archaeological adventurers who are making their way into stores and playrooms with tales of a mysterious island called Roca, where dinosaurs continue to live peacefully thanks to a magical fruit. At the 115th North American International Toy Fair in New York, I had a chance to see the new collection first-hand, and the folks at Playmobil recently sent us the new Hidden Temple with T-Rex Playset for a hands-on review.

There's a rumor setting the 'net on fire right now that may have some truth to it, if only because it was rumored at least once before... and now the time could be right. Film industry site The Tracking Board is reporting that Mattel is moving ahead with plans for a live-action film based on their 1988 DINO-RIDERS toys. According to Tracking Board, DINO-RIDERS is in development, with Alissa Phillips (MONEYBALL) and Stephen L’Heureux (SIN CITY: A DAME TO KILL FOR) producing for Solipsist Films. The basic gist of the original toys and animated series was about a war (a la TRANSFORMERS) between various factions of DINO-RIDERS - humans that came to Earth from other planets and turned Dinosaurs into sci-fi, weapon-wearing prehistoric warriors.

As 2015 got started, practically everyone in children's media was declaring it "The Year of the Dinosaur." I'm sure that claim has been staked in previous years as well, but 2015 has already seen the arrival of POWER RANGERS DINO CHARGE, the DINOSAUR TRAIN keeps on rolling over at PBS KIDS, Disney•Pixar's THE GOOD DINOSAUR comes later this Fall, and the year promises the return to Jurassic Park with the Chris Pratt-starring JURASSIC WORLD. But, as I've written in the past - has there every really been a year when kids don't like Dinosaurs? GRIMLOCK has been leading the Dinobots in TRANSFORMERS adventures since roughly 1984, so when Shout! Factory sent us a copy of TRANSFORMERS RESCUE BOTS: JURASSIC ADVENTURE, my interest was piqued. But, there are no Dinobots here... despite an included episode bearing the title "Return of the Dino Bot." It's pun, and and episode we'd seen way back when on the late Hub Network - one in which a life-sized robotic Tyrannosaurus Rex began wreaking havoc on Griffin Rock. "True Dinobots" or not, any collection of RESCUE BOTS is still fine by me, and should be fine for just about anyone with preschoolers.

TFWe've got quite a few of Hasbro's KRE-O sets here at Rock Father HQ, KRE-O being their spin on the building brick category (technically, "Oxford Bricks" re-branded for the U.S.), and "compatible with major brands," which means that they can be mixed-and-matched with LEGO, Mega Bloks, C3, you name it. I've even reviewed a few KRE-O sets here on the site, and one of the earliest came from the TRANSFORMERS assortment. Now, with TRANSFORMERS: AGE OF EXTINCTION obliterating the box office, there's some new sets, and Hasbro sent us a couple to check out. Here's my thoughts...
