Here's a 'Monster' Spotify Playlist...

What makes a monster song? For many reasons, the title "Monster" is one that is often used by a host of artists that transcend genres. From Product of Hate's blistering metal single (for which I directed the music video), to Kanye West's legendary collaboration with Jay-Z, Nicki Minaj, Rick Ross and Bon Iver... from the pop stylings of Lady Gaga and Paramore to the folksy grooves of Mumford & Sons... and from the metallic crunch of Disturbed to the King of Pop, Michael Jackson, countless artists have birthed their own "Monster." To celebrate this oddity is to enjoy it together, and I've curated a new Spotify Playlist featuring 23 distinct songs (nearly an hour and a half of music) that share just one similarity - the single-word title, "Monster." Stream it in the web player below, or click here to follow the playlist on Spotify.

Disney's THE JUNGLE BOOK is a film that I've had a real connection with this year, having attended its red carpet premiere in Los Angeles, and getting a chance to sit down with Director Jon Favreau and much of the principal cast back in April. Promotional activities aside, it's a fantastic film that I love immensely, and one that I'd been looking forward to sharing with my own family after returning to Illinois. Favreau's direction from a screenplay by Justin Marks was able to hit all the right notes in such a dramatic way that I found myself moved in an unexpected manner. Visually stunning and with a real focus on family, it's one of 2016's best, and audiences certainly agree, propelling it to box office success well-beyond what anyone had predicted. Now available on Blu-ray, DVD and Digital HD from Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment, we decided it was time for another movie night in the backyard here at Rock Father HQ, just as we've done with films such as ZOOTOPIA and STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS over the all-too-short summer break. Together with some good friends, it was time to turn our backyard into a Jungle...

When Spotify and services like it first hit the scene, I was not a supporter - but I've become one, particularly for music discovery. When it comes to that "discovery," a lot of it comes down to new generations of listeners that are experiencing the older stuff for the very first time, and with that in mind, Spotify has launched Landmark - "an original video series about monumental moments in music history," and  "whether delving into the origins of thrash metal or the release of a classic album, each installment of Landmark enlists credible, eclectic voices to explain not just what happened, but why it still matters." Paired with themed companion playlists, listeners can dig deeper after they watch. On August 18, METALLICA: THE EARLY YEARS will make its debut, and tonight we've got a trailer...

Back-to-School is still such a strange time of year around here - something that just seven years ago was decades behind us, and the thought of having one kid in school was unbelievable, much less having two. But now my wife and I do have two in school, and at the end of the month The Rock Daughters™ will be rockin' the halls once more. As our lives become busier with each passing year, and seemingly with each flip of the calendar, it's also incredible how much we depend on technology to hold it all together. Here at Rock Father HQ, my office PC is labeled with a Batcave-esque label that describes on the monitor exactly what it is: "THE ROCK FATHER - COMMAND CENTER." That HP desktop has been labeled as such for years, and my laptops are always a component of my "Mobile HQ" as I travel. Now it's time to tie the whole family into one, and for that we've added the HP Pavilion Liquid Platinum Gaming Laptop (15-AU010WM) to the arsenal - one of the all-new lineup of HP computers available at Walmart just in time for Back-to-School this year. It's a perfect machine for the entire family.

In just a few weeks, the school bells will be ringing as kids prepare to rock the halls for another year of learning. While that means that the Back-to-School season is officially upon us as families shop for school supplies and new clothes for fall, it also means that we're just about to "the dog days of summer" - a time when families will be out there rockin' the road once more for a late summer road trip. Whether it's a far-off locale or a quick weekend run to a fun spot just hours away, it's always important to hit the road prepared - both the family and the ride. For me, that means a trip to the Walmart Auto Center for an oil change

As I type these words, I'm just hours away from boarding a plane en route to Los Angeles to work the press junket for Disney's THE JUNGLE BOOK, and to attend the film's red carpet premiere at the famed El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood. Thanks to technology, I've set this to post while I'm cruising at 35,000 feet in the air, somewhere high above the American Midwest. In preparation for Director Jon Favreau's live-action reimagining of the 1967 animated feature (reviewed here), my mind has been loaded with earworms... those from the soundtrack of the original. The iconic music of the Sherman Brothers, along with Terry Gilkyson's "The Bare Necessities" are classic, and over the years, these timeless songs have been covered many times. With that in mind, and using the BIG BAD VOODOO DADDY version of "I Wanna Be Like You" as a jumping-off point (after all, that band and Favreau have the SWINGERS connection), I've curated a new Spotify Playlist that features nearly one hour of the best JUNGLE BOOK covers out there. You'll find FALL OUT BOY, ROBBIE WILLIAMS, THE JONAS BROTHERS, BOWLING FOR SOUP, SIOUXSIE AND THE BANSHEES, TONY BENNETT, SELENA GOMEZ and more, all putting their signature styles to the famous soundtrack. Check it out via this link, or in the embedded player below, and for coverage of 2016's THE JUNGLE BOOK, follow #JungleBookEvent on Social Media to check-in with 25 writers on the ground in L.A.!
