I've often said that "we're living in a Golden Age of television for kids and family" audiences, and that sentiment is one that bears repeating. Changes in culture and viewing habits have forced change among content creators, and competition has been a great thing for audiences as the quality and diversity of programming has really seen a huge uptick over the past few years. For Netflix in particular, the focus on kids and family has been a big one, and their partnerships have spawned some incredible things - from educational and entertaining, to adventurous and action-packed... and sometimes, all of the above, there's something for every taste. Here's some Rock Father Picks for the Spring of 2017!
It should come as no surprise that I'm a big supporter of music and arts programs in our schools, and music education overall. For those with children in band or thinking about getting started in band, Music & Arts is the largest retailer of Band and Orchestra Instruments in the U.S., and this Wednesday they're kicking off the Back-to-School music season with a special #MusicArtsBTS Twitter Party hosted by The Network (@TheNetworkNiche) and Co-Hosted by yours truly (@TheRockFather) along with @Optimistic_Mama, @EileenCCampos & @PragmaticMom. RSVP on our facebook event for a chance to win musical instruments or gift cards to Music & Arts!
PSYCHOSTICK are pretty notorious when it comes to the realm of comedic metal. Strange thing is, they've also crossed-over into the realm of slightly dated, yet completely classic educational programming in recent times, and the start was their cover of the READING RAINBOW theme early last year. Now they're back with a cover of the theme song from BILL NYE THE SCIENCE GUY, and I can only wonder if it was fueled by the fact that the series recently made its debut on Netflix. In fact, I mentioned it in last month's #StreamTeam column, and I have a feeling that the gents from PSYCHOSTICK have been doing a little binge-watching. Crank this one up...
On Monday, February 15, 2016, PBS KIDS will invite kids ages 3-8 to explore new words of science and astronomy in READY JET GO! A CGI animated series that will help children learn astronomy and Earth science concepts, READY JET GO! will launch with a full program of content related to the series, including games, hands-on activities and parent resources, all available in early 2016 as well. This news became public at the PBS Annual Meeting in Austin, Texas this week.
This week, most of my fellow PBS KIDS VIPs (Very Involved Parents) are in Austin, Texas attending the PBS Annual Meeting. While I had to miss this year's meeting, the news is still flowing, and today comes the full details on this Fall's next big hit, NATURE CAT! First reported here on THE ROCK FATHER back in January, NATURE CAT is a new series from creators David Rudman (“Cookie Monster” and “Baby Bear” on SESAME STREET; “Scooter” and “Janice” on THE MUPPETS) and Adam Rudman (TOM & JERRY, SESAME STREET, CYBERCHASE), that aims to encourage children ages 3-8 to explore and develop connections with the natural world. The series is now set to debut on November 25 on PBS KIDS (check local listings for times), and will feature a very familiar voice cast...
