Now this is cool. On October 13 at 12pm ET/PT, Nickelodeon will introduce children viewers to the exciting world of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) with the hour-long premiere of the brand-new, interactive animated series, BLAZE AND THE MONSTER MACHINES. Touted as "the first preschool show on TV to comprehensively cover all areas of STEM in every episode," BLAZE AND THE MONSTER MACHINES follows a monster truck named Blaze and his eight-year-old driver AJ. Figure in a nine-year-old little girl named Gabby that serves as head mechanic, and you can count me in for my little monster truck-loving girls as the series explores the physics of how things move - tackling problems through scientific inquiry and mathematics, while discovering the parts needed to make everyday technologies work. nickdoraappThe folks over at Nickelodeon have just launched a new DORA & FRIENDS Preschool App on iOS based on their new series, DORA & FRIENDS: INTO THE CITY. In this new adventure, kids can choose from ten locations from the series, including the Arco Iris Cafe, the magical cave and the beach; dozens of props like cameras, microphones and blankets; and several Latin-influenced musical tracks from the series to help bring the scene of their own creation to life. Users also can create up to four customized friends and select different hairstyles, facial features, outfits and even names, as well as record their own voices which can be incorporated into the story. PBS KIDS VIPCan you believe that Back-to-School Season is already here? In just about a month, I'll officially have a kindergartener, and that sorta weirds me out. Five years of parenting already? Alas, my friends at PBS Distribution have scored a coup, partnering with Walmart for their “BACK TO SCHOOL PRESCHOOL PROMOTION,” – designed to entertain children during the summer months when school’s out, but prep them for what lies ahead. Parents can find specially marked (and priced) educational, episodic DVDs from CAILLOU, WORDGIRL, ARTHUR and DANIEL TIGER, each covering the major learning categories taught throughout the academic year such as social skills, reading, math, and science. Here's what you can look for...

I've reviewed CHUGGINGTON here on THE ROCK FATHER in the past, but something interesting has happened since the last time I discussed these chatty trains and their adventures - Little Finley turned two, and she's become a lot more chatty herself - and when she walks over and hands me a CHUGGINGTON DVD accompanied by the request of "Daddy, watch train?" it's absolutely adorable. With the recent release of EXPLORER KOKO on DVD, we've had the opportunity to experience some new episodes here at Rock Father HQ, and a cool thing that's also a rarity is that Koko is a female train, and as a parent of two girls, I like seeing her in the lead for this collection.

This week, Disney Junior's SOFIA THE FIRST scored a whopping six Daytime Emmy Award Nominations, among them a nod for "Best Preschool Animated Program." The appeal of Sofia has been widespread since the beginning, as the series' ratings have just been massive, and the show has attracted an audience of kids - girls and boys alike - who have been immersed in the Kingdom of Enchancia. A couple of weeks ago, when both of my girls were home recovering from a nasty virus that had been going around, we threw an indoor beach party in a cold, rainy day - all while checking out the DVD release of SOFIA THE FIRST: THE FLOATING PALACE.
