Now that Disney is on Netflix... a Look Ahead

Netflix Stream TeamLast week, the day that many were waiting for finally arrived, with some fresh content from The Walt Disney Company making it's way to Netflix. Now, Disney on Netflix is not a new thing (titles have been there before), but per an agreement made a few years back and now officially enacted, the floodgates are slowly beginning to open for recent releases. In fact, all 2015-2016 theatrical releases from Disney will be headed to Netflix at some point in the near future, with Walt Disney Animation Studios' ZOOTOPIA making the big splash, along with other recent fare like THE FINEST HOURS. So what else can we look forward to? A ton of great films from Disney, MARVEL, Pixar, and yes, even Lucasfilm...

STRANGER THINGS 2 is coming...

Despite my gig as a member of the Netflix Stream Team, I'm behind on one of 2016's most buzzed-about hits, STRANGER THINGS. In truth, I got a couple of episodes in and then stopped thinking my wife might want to watch it, but time slipped away from me. As I attempt to catch-up on the 80s-inspired goodness, those who already made it to the end and are craving more can get excited: STRANGER THINGS 2 is coming in 2017, and it will be 1984 all over again...

THE ROCK FATHER is a member of the Netflix #StreamTeam and a Promotional Partner for DreamWorks Animation

It was exactly one year ago this week that I first shared The Rock Daughters™' love of Dinotrux here on THE ROCK FATHER™ Magazine. In the time since, the Netflix Original Series from DreamWorks Animation has maintained its status as a must-watch, its profile growing well beyond the walls of early adopters like ourselves, and spreading far and wide as kids and families have entered the Mechazoic Era, where giant creatures that are half-dinosaur/half-construction vehicle help to shape the landscape while teaching valuable skills like friendship and teamwork. If your kids are ready to Trux it Up, the tools you need  for a party are all readily available at this point! From Mattel's fantastic line of Dinotrux toys to a full assortment of Free Printables, everything you throw a Dinotrux Birthday Party is ready to rock! Happy Birthday, Dinotrux!

Netflix #StreamTeamOne of this year's most surprising new series' for families comes from Netflix, with BEAT BUGS bridging generations by introducing new listeners to the music of THE BEATLES through the adventures of five best friends -- Jay, Kumi, Crick, Buzz and Walter -- who band together to discover life's most important lessons in an overgrown suburban backyard, which to them is their entire universe. When the first 13-episode season began streaming earlier this month, it was an immediate hit right out of the gate here at Rock Father HQ, but for us it came with a challenge posited by the leaders of the Netflix #StreamTeam, a crew I've been a part of for the past three years: Cover "All You Need Is Love" and invite all of you to do the same. BEAT BUGS opens with a 30-second rendition of the 1967 single from the Lennon-McCartney songbook, and just as the original is said to have taken 33 takes to get right, The Rock Daughters™ and I (with Mommy behind the camera) couldn't quite nail it in one shot...

Going HOME with TIP and OH...

Netflix Stream TeamDreamWorks Animation's 2015 family feature HOME, was a strange thing for us - a rare animated film that just didn't really strike a chord at all. Featuring the voices of Rihanna and Jim Parsons in a buddy tale about a young girl and her alien friend, I didn't like it - but what was surprising is how flat it fell with The Rock Daughters™, who loved Parsons' Oh more as a little action figure (which they still have) than a CGI character on the big screen. When I was invited to the DreamWorks Animation campus in Glendale, California to work on some promotional efforts for VOLTRON: LEGENDARY DEFENDER as part of my gig with the Netflix Stream Team, I was a little apprehensive about the secondary component to the assignment - taking a then-early look at HOME: ADVENTURES WITH TIP & OH, their new animated series based on the feature film. I took a seat in the screening room and settled in for some episodes... and much to my delight, I really liked it!

Netflix Stream TeamThe MARVEL Gods were shining upon San Diego Comic-Con last night, bringing forth so much goodness it could barely be contained. From the new Hasbro action figures featuring DOCTOR STRANGE and SPIDER-MAN to the first trailer for the Netflix Original Series, MARVEL's LUKE CAGE, it looked like a big night... but then it became a HUGE night. Also released were the first trailers for MARVEL's IRON FIST and MARVEL's THE DEFENDERS - a New York superhero team-up that features characters from all of the Netflix/MARVEL collaborations coming together as a team. Let's look at that one first - a teaser set to NIRVANA's "Come As You Are."
