They say that time flies when you're a parent, and that's something I never thought much about until we actually had kids. This summer marks two years of backyard movies at our house, or as I like to say it in the interest of sounding fancier: "The Backyard Cinema at Rock Father HQ proudly enters it's third season of screenings." If I was being ultra-cool with it, I'd go ahead and make a full schedule of films, but it's something that tends to happen on-the-fly. Pulling-off a backyard movie night is dependent on a few things, like our schedule, the availability of friends and neighbors to attend, weather, and just how badly the mosquitoes are biting. This week, we kicked-off our third summer of movies with Early Man, the latest film from Aardman, the award-winning tribe that brought you Wallace & GromitChicken Run, and Shaun the Sheep Movie. Complete with some special soccer balls that my friends at Lionsgate sent over (you may recall that I gave some away back in February when the film was in theaters), the backyard was set-up for fun as not only the first screening of the season, but the first on our new deck (which I still have to stain and finish furnishing). Would you believe that Early Man is sort of a sports film?

The Walt Disney Signature Collection has been bringing movie fans all-new editions of some of the biggest classics from Walt Disney Animation Studios. Launching with Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Beauty and the Beast and Pinocchio have also received the Signature treatment, and the latest to appear is the 1942 classic, Bambi. We have a strange relationship with that film here in our house... quite simply, my wife won't watch it. Still, that didn't stop us from making that our second film in our latest run of Disney Movies Under the Stars in our backyard theater here at Rock Father HQ with the Bambi Anniversary Edition.

It was last year that something finally happened that I'd been hoping to do for a very long while... we finally put together a backyard theater here at Rock Father HQ. In partnership with Disney, we started an outdoor movie series right in our own backyard - and it was awesome. Movies are best enjoyed in a group, and while a great cinema experience is fantastic, there's something special about seeing a movie outdoors. Drive-in theaters are the best, and of course there's movies in the park - but now technology has caught up to the point where it's affordable for families to host some screenings at home. First up for our 2017 season? Disney's live-action reimagining of Beauty and the Beast!

Disney's THE JUNGLE BOOK is a film that I've had a real connection with this year, having attended its red carpet premiere in Los Angeles, and getting a chance to sit down with Director Jon Favreau and much of the principal cast back in April. Promotional activities aside, it's a fantastic film that I love immensely, and one that I'd been looking forward to sharing with my own family after returning to Illinois. Favreau's direction from a screenplay by Justin Marks was able to hit all the right notes in such a dramatic way that I found myself moved in an unexpected manner. Visually stunning and with a real focus on family, it's one of 2016's best, and audiences certainly agree, propelling it to box office success well-beyond what anyone had predicted. Now available on Blu-ray, DVD and Digital HD from Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment, we decided it was time for another movie night in the backyard here at Rock Father HQ, just as we've done with films such as ZOOTOPIA and STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS over the all-too-short summer break. Together with some good friends, it was time to turn our backyard into a Jungle...
