I've reviewed CHUGGINGTON here on THE ROCK FATHER in the past, but something interesting has happened since the last time I discussed these chatty trains and their adventures - Little Finley turned two, and she's become a lot more chatty herself - and when she walks over and hands me a CHUGGINGTON DVD accompanied by the request of "Daddy, watch train?" it's absolutely adorable. With the recent release of EXPLORER KOKO on DVD, we've had the opportunity to experience some new episodes here at Rock Father HQ, and a cool thing that's also a rarity is that Koko is a female train, and as a parent of two girls, I like seeing her in the lead for this collection.
My friends at PBS KIDS and SESAME STREET have announced that beginning this Fall, they will introduce a bonus half-hour program on-air and on digital platforms. Starting Monday, September 1, the additional half-hour SESAME STREET program will air on weekday afternoons on PBS stations, complementing the one-hour series that airs weekday mornings (check local listings). For the first time, selected full episodes of the 30-minute show will also be available for free online at pbskids.org/video, on the PBS KIDS Video App and on the PBS KIDS Roku channel. By offering this bonus half hour of SESAME STREET in an additional timeslot and through a growing number of digital services, PBS KIDS hopes to reach even more children with one of America’s most beloved and educationally powerful children’s series.
With Addie starting kindergarten this Fall, learning this summer and building on her vocabulary are very important points for us. MARTHA SPEAKS is a great tool - a show "designed to bolster the oral vocabulary of 4-to7-year-olds, engaging them with humor and imagination." We're right in that sweet spot, and if you have a little one that is, too - then this week, tune into MARTHA SPEAKETH WEEKETH on PBS KIDS (check your local listings) to catch new episodes, and then check out the all-new Martha's Steaks game on the PBS KIDS website for even more learning fun!
On September 9, there's a new collection of DOC McSTUFFINS episodes headed for DVD! DOC McSTUFFINS: SCHOOL OF MEDICINE is a compilation that showcases "the many specialties in which doctors practice medicine and health care in a manner that young kids can comprehend." In her playhouse clinic, Doc is an optometrist, helping her stuffed owl toy, Professor Hoostburgh, to see clearly again. As a dentist, she fixes a tooth on Donny’s toy shark Mr. Chomp and, as a radiologist, Doc takes an inside look at Daisy’s arm after a Roller Disco fall. Then, Doc accidentally sprains her own ankle, so it’s up to her toys to provide the care and compassion to Doc herself and with rest, patience and plenty of cuddles, she will be as good as new, singing “The Doc is in.”
On July 15, PBS Distribution will release a pair of new DVD collections from two of PBS KIDS' biggest hits - CAILLOU and DANIEL TIGER'S NEIGHBORHOOD. Pre-orders for both have gone live, and I've got the full details on FUN AND GAMES WITH CAILLOU and DANIEL TRIES SOMETHING NEW, below - right here on THE ROCK FATHER...
June 2-6 is WordGirl Appreciation Week, and that means five new episodes of the three-time Emmy Award-Winning series from Scholastic Media are coming to PBS KIDS (check local listings). Inspired by the May "Word of the Month" - "appreciate" - during Appreciation Week, "young viewers will join WordGirl, Captain Huggy Face and friends on exciting adventures around town as they fight crime and protect the innocent – correcting poor grammar wherever they spot it and introducing key vocabulary words all along the way." To prep for a week of new adventures, here's four helpful tips to aid in teaching kids just what "appreciation" means (something we need to work on here at Rock Father HQ).
