Marvel Studios' BLACK PANTHER is a film that kicked-off what's been a truly incredible year for the superhero genre, and perhaps the year that we start looking beyond these movies as just "superhero" films, and perhaps something greater. Ryan Coogler's epic has already nabbed three Gold Globe Awards nominations, a dozen for the Critic's Choice and six GRAMMY nods. Will Oscar be next? Magic 8 Ball at Rock Father™ HQ says "likely." Now Marvel Entertainment is looking ahead in celebration with the release of a new "Welcome to Wakanda" featurette. See it below and mark my words... Black Panther is just getting started!

ASTRA Neighborhood Toy Store Day 2017

Neighborhood Toy Store Day is Saturday, November 11, 2017, and for the second year, The Rock Father™ has teamed-up with ASTRA (American Specialty Toy Retailer Association) to help spread the word as we officially kick-off the holiday shopping season!

I've said it before, but in the age of the online retail and the big box, toy stores are more important than ever, and your independent neighborhood toy store is a place where families can get personalized customer service and go hands-on with many of the season's hottest holiday toys. Many store owners have even earned the ASTRA Certified Play Expert (CPE) designation after completing a rigorous training program that teaches the science behind the power of play in relation to a child's development stages and learning styles. Additionally, the Play Experts at ASTRA have named their picks for the 2017 Best Toys for Kids - and these are toys that might be a little off-the-radar of the mainstream, but absolutely worth checking out at a participating retailer near you!

They call it "the Oscars of the toy industry," and today the finalists have been revealed for the 2018 Toy of the Year (TOTY) Awards, presented by The Toy Association. Announced at Play Fair in NYC, the 122 finalists can be voted on by consumers between now and January 5 as their favorite picks in each of the 17 categories will compete for the top slot. As someone who writes about toys regularly both here at The Rock Father™ Magazine and at The Toy Insider, I have some pretty strong opinions about these toys... and it's gonna be a tough race - there's some fantastic toys going up against each other! Check out all the finalists below, along with my "Rock Father Pick" for select categories, along with some "Rock Father Approved" items that we just like a lot...

In an election year, it's appropriate that the 2016 Journeys Alternative Press Music Awards, Fueled by Monster Energy has adopted a familiar red, white & blue color scheme as fan voting opens for the annual APMAS.  The nominees were revealed today via posts on Instagram and Twitter, along with a reminder that the show is being displaced from its longtime home in Cleveland due to the upcoming Republican National Convention. This year's event will instead be broadcast live from the Schottenstein Center in Columbus, Ohio on the evening of July 18, 2016, with 8-time AP cover artists Alex Gaskarth and Jack Barakat of ALL TIME LOW returning for hosting duties once more. And the nominees are...

As we sit in the middle of "Award Season" with the 87th Academy Awards taking place this weekend, the crew over at Nickelodeon is hard-at-work putting together the 28th Annual Kids' Choice Awards. With Nick Jonas set to host the celebration live on Saturday, March 28, at 8 p.m. (ET/PT) from The “Fabulous” Forum in Inglewood, Calif, there's some big first-time nominees this year (like INTO THE WOODS' Meryl Streep), along with several all-new categories. The folks at Nick hit me with all the nominees this evening, and I'm sharing them here on THE ROCK FATHER for your consideration. Want to make this even more interesting? I'll highlight in bold who I think should win, and we can compare notes on March 28, deal?

For the third year in a row, the folks behind the annual Fids & Kamily Music Awards (a play on The Village Voice's long-running "Pazz & Jop") have either graciously or foolishly invited me to take a seat on the panel of judges to determine the Top 10 best albums of the year in the kids and kamily music realm. I, alongside other journalists, writers, bloggers, producers, radio personalities and folks associated with the family music scene, must listen to dozens of albums, and then figure out what's the best of the best. Each judge has to nominate and score 10 albums of their own, and a formula is then applied to choose the ranking. This year was exceptionally difficult, as there's been some really great albums (alongside some stinkers), and choosing just 10 is tricky enough without having more than 10 favorites. Today, we announce the winners of the 2014 Fids & Kamily Music Awards (the 9th Annual), as revealed this morning on the Spare the Rock, Spoil the Child radio show...
