My 2016 April Fools' Day Post
EXCLUSIVE: The resurgence of family TV continues, as another staple from the former ABC "TGIF" lineup is getting new life on Netflix. With the recent success of its FULLER HOUSE, the continuation of FULL HOUSE (which ran from 1987-1995) and the official announcement that Season Two has been ordered, Netflix is once again teaming with Jeff Franklin Productions, Miller-Boyett Productions and Warner Horizon Television for an update of FAMILY MATTERS, the Chicago-set sitcom that aired from 1989-1997 on ABC, prior to jumping over to CBS for its final season, ending its run in 1998. Brian Wright, Director of Kids & Family Programming for Netflix (who I last spoke with here), confirmed exclusively for THE ROCK FATHER Magazine that a 13-episode direct-to-series order has been placed.
With the success of The LEGO Movie and the massive response to not one, but two trailers for The LEGO Batman Movie just last week, it should be crystal clear that families want more cinematic LEGO adventures to compliment their hands-on play, whether it be building sets, or those sweet LEGO video games. This month delivered two new Netflix Original Series' that can help quench that thirst for brick-tastic entertainment, with LEGO Bionicle: The Journey of One and LEGO Friends: The Power of Friendship both streaming their first, four-episode seasons in their entirety on Netflix. How did The Rock Daughters and I kick things off? By building some LEGO sets to mirror the on-screen adventures...
VOLTRON is one of the sacred properties of my childhood, a mighty robot formed from five mechanical lions... a heroic beast who has been written about here in the virtual pages of THE ROCK FATHER Magazine on more than a few occasions. I was Voltron for Halloween back in '84 or '85, I had the toys, and still have a Voltron figure here in my office at HQ - one that the girls are frequently asking to play with. With the announcement of DreamWorks' VOLTRON: LEGENDARY DEFENDER as a Netflix Original Series (complete with a new line of figures and vehicles from Playmates Toys), I was anxious to get a look at some footage, and this weekend that first-look arrived following a panel at WonderCon. Check out the first preview, "Forming A Legend..."
Ready for more prehistoric mechanical adventures? At last, Dinotrux Season 2 is now streaming in its entirety on Netflix! Ty, Revvit and the Dinotrux team are back and ready to build a racetrack, meet new friends and continue to fight against their biggest enemy of all: D-Structs. There's 13 new episodes to enjoy, and for those that are into Mattel's growing line of Dinotrux toys - they're no longer Toys "R" Us-exclusive, which means you can now get the latest vehicles and playsets at other retailers including Walmart, Target, and Amazon. Check out the Seaon 2 Dinotrux Trailer below, right here on THE ROCK FATHER Magazine!
“Whatever happened to predictability? The milkman, the paperboy, evening tv?”
Those famous lyrics from the opening theme to FULL HOUSE may be even more relevant in 2016 than they were when audiences first heard them back in 1987. While Oberweis brought it back a bit here in Chicagoland, for the most part the milkman is a relic, the paperboy has been replaced with the digital text you’re currently reading, and evening tv… well, let’s just say that’s become “streaming tv,” and underneath that sentiment is something more - an element of “family,” something that Netflix is aiming to bring back into homes during the years ahead.
When VOLTRON: LEGENDARY DEFENDER was announced as a new Netflix Original Series from DreamWorks Animation last month, I broke the news with excitement - throwing down a tale of when I was Voltron for Halloween... and how much I loved my mid-80s Voltron toys. In 2016, I still have a Voltron here in my office, and with the new series set for launch this Fall, I expect that The Rock Daughters will soon grow to love the mystical robot lions just as I do. This week, some other news came down that I'd been waiting for - that "an expansive" new toy line will launch in Spring 2017, and they're coming from Playmates Toys - the folks behind the longtime success of the TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES toys.
