We're approaching the home stretch as we move toward Christmas 2015, and that means it's time to stream some Holiday Movies and Specials on Netflix. It's seems like this year is a little light when it comes to brand-new Xmas content, but one of the biggest and best is a Netflix Original Special, and that's the Sofia Coppola-directed A VERY MURRAY CHRISTMAS. In the spirit of the 12 Days of Christmas (and as a Netflix #StreamTeam Member) I've picked out 12 Gifts of Netflix - a dozen seasonally-appropriate movies, specials and episodes for various members of the family to enjoy. Some are for the kids - some are grownups-only, and others can be enjoyed with the whole family. To spread a little cheer as well, I've got a flash giveaway included where one (1) lucky reader will receive six months of Netflix!
It was just about a month ago that a teaser for the Neflix Original Holiday Special, A VERY MURRAY CHRISTMAS hit the web. Today comes the full trailer, and what Bill Murray and half of Hollywood have cookin' may well be the finest example of Holiday Cheer to be spread for grownups this season. Directed by Sofia Coppola, A VERY MURRAY CHRISTMAS will be available for streaming this December, only on Netflix. See the full trailer below, right here on THE ROCK FATHER Magazine...
Who could've predicted that Netflix - a company known for shipping movies on DVD in little red envelopes - would evolve into a streaming giant and bastion of original content that would proudly carry a flag for resurrecting retired pop culture icons? While it was probably never predicted, that's just what happened, and Netflix has become a home for reimaginings of DANGER MOUSE, FULL HOUSE (FULLER HOUSE), INSPECTOR GADGET and CARE BEARS (CARE BEARS & COUSINS). The latest characters from my youth to become a Netflix Original Series are the POPPLES, brought back by Saban Brands and launched with a five-episode inaugural season. I remember these little creatures fondly - cuddly little munchkins that could roll into a furball, and then "POP!" back open into upright-standing, long-tailed, brightly-colored bear-like creatures. Like all good fruits of the 80s, they once had an animated series and a robust toyline - originally spawned by American Greetings, the same folks that brought forth Strawberry Shortcake and the Care Bears. Three decades later, POPPLES are back, and thanks to Spin Master, they're back in the toy aisle as well - as a Walmart Exclusive for the Holiday Season.
It's a little bit of deja vu, but back in 2012 when CARE BEARS: WELCOME TO CARE-A-LOT was still airing on the short-lived Hub Network, I featured the excellent "Sleuth of Bears" episode in my 31 Days of Halloween. Three years later, CARE BEARS lives on Netflix, and while the launch of the all-new CARE BEARS & COUSINS is some months off, the folks at Lionsgate have just released CARE BEARS: MYSTERY IN CARE-A-LOT as a three-episode, specially-priced DVD that puts "Sleuth of Bears" and other seasonally-appropriate episodes together in a nice little package. It's true, the Care Bears are still haunted by images of Bennefare, the "original SCARE BEAR" as seen in a long-running series of horror films that are big hits in Care-A-Lot.
I always say that it's a sorta odd thing that we only have one true Netflix profile, despite the availability of Netflix Kids, and the fact that I, as a card-carrying writer in the Netflix #StreamTeam, should certainly have one of my own. Bottom line is that the Netflix AI (artificial intelligence) tends to think that "James" wishes to watch a completely bipolar assortment of family programming... or highlight inappropriate for kids stuff. Fact is, The Rock Daughters still dominate our Netflix profile, and the time has come once more to throw down a few choice picks for mid-October (for kids and grownups alike). Let's go traveling down the rabbit hole and off broadway, cool?
We're big fans of PLAYMOBIL here at Rock Father HQ, one of our most-played-with toys of the past couple of years being the furnished shopping mall that I featured on the site a year ago (still played with every single day). With SUPER 4 on Netflix (#StreamTeam represent!), and new figures being released all the time, there's a lot of new stuff that we don't always get around to picking up, but still admire from afar. One such piece is the PLAYMOBIL Play Box Haunted House (5638) that was issued just in time to make my annual 31 Days of Halloween here on THE ROCK FATHER Magazine. While we don't have this particular set in our personal collection just yet, the Play Box collection has always been pretty cool, and this one is no exception.
