If you don't live on the East Coast, there is a good chance that you've never been to, and probably have never even heard of Hess Express stores. While I've never actually been to one (we live near Chicago), I'm familiar with them... since I like toys. You see, Hess has an annual tradition each holiday season (which I've written about in the past) in which they release what has become known as "The Hess Toy Truck," and they've been doing it for fifty years - a tradition introduced by Leon Hess in 1964 as "a fun, high quality and affordable toy for families during the holiday season." This year, there will be a Hess Toy Truck unveiled for the holiday season, but it's also sort of the end of an era, as Hess announced this past week that they're selling their retail stores to Marathon/Speedway, and will becoming a purely-production company.

Earlier this year, after the past success of their building sets based on JOHN DEERE and CATERPILLAR, the folks at MEGA BLOKS added JEEP to the mix and combined all three under a new brand, AMERICAN BUILDERS. While these sets are geared toward kids 5+, I'm pretty well-aware that there's quite a few grownups who enjoy these as well, especially if they strike an emotional chord of some kind - and these certainly can. Where nostalgia can be a factor (I played with a lot of John Deere tractors as a boy), adventure is the key on the Jeep note, and my girls and I recently dug into the American Builders Jeep Off-Road Adventure Set, which was sent to Rock Father HQ for review.

We don't have HESS EXPRESS stores here in the Midwest, but my friends on the East Coast do, and today comes some pre-Holiday news regarding an annual tradition for those with a Hess nearby: The Hess Toy Truck. For nearly 50 years, families have been picking up and collecting the Hess Toy Trucks, which were introduced by Leon Hess in 1964 as "a fun, high quality and affordable toy for families during the holliday season." While the line has gone beyond just trucks to include vehicles such as a police car, fire engines, a space shuttle, jet, and race cars, this year they're back to trucks, with the 2013 Hess Toy Truck and Tractor. Check it out below...
