It's still hot outside. Not as bad as when I posted my last update from The Rock Father Garden, but it's still hitting 90 on a daily basis... and it's still dry. We've finally had some rain, but it's been in monsoon quantities for some very short periods of time. Too much, too fast - not right to make a dent in the incredibly dry earth - cracks in which can be seen running through our once green backyard. Sure, the green is returning, but man is that lawn scorched. We've kept the veggie garden watered, though it's still been tough.
I need to lower my expectations for everything. As depressing as that may sound, it's true. We've been having bad luck when it comes to cool-sounding events being 'as-advertised' when we actually get there. The May Kid's Workshop at Home Depot? No exception. On a National Scale, I think this is a great program with great partners - but my local store was lacking in execution. Allow me to explain...
If you've been waiting for a chance to get your little ones into the gardening spirit, this weekend is the perfect time to do so. On Saturday May 5, 2012 - All Home Depot stores will present a FREE Kids Workshop sponsored by Bonnie Plants and Growums. As you might already know, The Rock Father is a big fan of those folks, and applauds their efforts to get kids outside and into the garden. From 9am-12pm, your little ones can make their own FREE planter box, and receive a FREE Bonnie Plants/Growums vegetable or herb! Check out the video below that details this Saturday's festivities, and the Growums program.

Proving that nothing can ever happen entirely trouble-free, our Growums had a mishap this week. After doing quite well up until now, we were intending to wait maybe one more week until planting them in a raised garden bed here at Rock Father HQ. Everything was right on schedule when Carin the Carrot sent over an email alerting us that it's planting time, but with this weird weather, it just felt right to wait a little while longer. One of our dogs did not agree with this decision.
The wacky weather here in Northern Illinois continues this week, with temperatures slingshotting from the 60's to the 20's. As I type this right now, my iPhone says it's 40 right now, with a low of 28 expected for tonight. By Saturday it's expected that we'll hit 70 again, but where did those early 80's go? Regardless, it's about time to start planting things in the ground, but we're holding off for now. In the meantime, an email arrived this morning with Captain Cuke informing me that it's time to check on the Growums again - specifically, the Pizza Garden. I'd also received an email from Carrin the Carrot, with a reminder to check on someone else. You see, we welcomed another member of the Growums family a few weeks ago - one that I have yet to mention. Her name? Princess Strawberry.
