While there's certain other cities that might be associated with coffee on a more immediate basis thanks to crafty marketing and perception, Chicago is definitively a coffee town, and now there's some stats to prove that. Having lived in the Chicagoland area for most of my life, but also having visited much of our country, I really don't need data to back up what I already know - but still, it's cool to have it. Coffee is in my blood, and that's something I've mentioned many times here on this very site, and I famously trace that back to my great grandfather, who worked as a coffee taster in Chicago nearly a century ago. Just like him, people here are always on a quest for the perfect cup, and when you drink a lot of coffee that also means a perfect pot.

June is an important month around here, but it’s also a slightly weird one. Being that Father’s Day sits around the mid-month mark, that’s usually a signal for a huge influx of pitches I start getting from companies looking for some last-minute coverage in hopes of reaching families before the annual celebration of Fatherhood. Most of those don’t resonate with me, and some are fairly ridiculous -- many of them coming from folks I don’t hear from during the rest of the year. It’s almost like having a second birthday.  You see, I don’t need a “day” to celebrate what I am and always will be, but Father’s Day does hold some additional importance here - significance well-beyond selling greeting cards, novelty ties and coffee mugs (but remember that last one). I flipped the switch on this website on Father’s Day seven years ago. And our youngest daughter was born on Father’s Day weekend back in 2012. In life, there’s certain things that are ever-present, and for me, coffee is one of those things. Yes, coffee… and there’s familial importance. You could say that there’s “coffee in my blood,” but the more accurate a statement would be that it’s actually in my DNA. A close relationship with coffee has a lineage in my family, and that’s something that I’ve written about before. My great grandfather… my father’s grandfather, my grandmother’s father… he was a coffee taster by trade. My first name was his middle name.

A BreakFEAST for the Ho-Ho-Holidays...

Brought to you by Hungry Jack. THE ROCK FATHER is a proud Hungry Jack  Brand Ambassador.

Now that my favorite season is behind us (see ya next year, Fall!), we’re past the speed bump of Thanksgiving and racing full-steam-ahead toward the checkered flag that joyously waves upon the end of the Holiday season here at Rock Father HQ - Christmas. No matter what you choose or choose not to celebrate, the cold that December brings is always a great reminder of warm times spent with family - a chance to cozy up in the comforts of home, with great times and great meals. Around these parts, it’s no secret that breakfast is my favorite meal, and whether I cook for the family on a weekend morning, or break from tradition by doing mid-week breakfast-for-dinner, I try to make it a BreakFEAST by serving up Hungry Jack Pancakes and Waffles, but also letting everyone warm-up a bit with their favorite syrups.

THE ROCK FATHER is a Folgers Preferred Partner...

It's beginning to look a lot like... well, not quite either, but sort of an odd mix between Christmas and Thanksgiving around these parts. Let's be honest here, for me, Thanksgiving is more of a speed bump between the two main events of the year - Halloween and Christmas. It's a weird space since it's technically still fall/harvest, but here we are in mid-November and I've already packed-away the scarecrow for the season, composted the pumpkins and cornstalks, and have been taking advantage of the "unseasonably warm" temperatures by doing a little early-season "Griswolding" at Rock Father HQ.  Indeed, while they're not on yet, some festive lights have been installed on the grounds - my coffee-fueled antics amusing the children as I try do do as much as I can within limited daylight hours. It was dark by 4:50pm today, and by then, I'd already consumed nearly a full pot of Folgers.

Coffee & Rock: Folgers Coffeehouse Blend

THE ROCK FATHER is a Folgers Preferred Partner...

During my adventures in rock, there have been some "coffeehouse" eras - two in particular that really stick with me. In the mid 1990s, I was in a band that was known to play indie coffeehouses on a frequent basis - this being an era where we could plug-in and go full-blown electric and have it be a non-issue - a time before the major rise of the national chains. Some years later, in the early 2000s, I once again found myself doing the occasional coffeehouse gig, but this time it was more in-line with what you might think of - a lone guy rockin' an acoustic guitar while doing the singer/songwriter thing. Through all those years and those that have come since, one common thread is that all of those places had a house blend, and I drank a lot of it. Now, in my years as an at-home parent, one of the first things I do every morning is brew a cup of Folgers, and their new Coffeehouse Blend has really taken me back... but with a lot more options.

I can fully declare that fall is my favorite season of them all. Sure, I do like every season for different reasons at different times, but there’s just something about the switch from summer to fall that makes everything just feel right. I’ve often felt that perhaps my autumn obsession (and that of all-things pumpkin) might be due, in part, to the fact that I’m an October baby - born just days before Halloween. While there’s many things to love about fall, family is a big part of all of it - from visits to the pumpkin patches and apple orchards, to gathering around the table for a great meal. I’ve always been a big breakfast guy, but when the whole family (or the extended family) is home, there’s nothing better on a weekend than to start the day off right… a time to take things beyond “breakfast” and make it a BreakFEAST with Hungry Jack!
