Last night, THE BRIAN SETZER ORCHESTRA took a break from their 12th Annual Christmas Rocks! Tour to stop in and do a few songs on CONAN. The band performed "Here Comes Santa Claus" and "Yabba-Dabba Yuletide," along with a special version of the DICK VAN DYKE SHOW Theme Song in honor of Dick's appearance with Conan O'Brien as well. Check out some video below, and look for The BSO to hit a town near you. You can read my review of their recent stop in Waukegan, Illinois right here. Their latest Holiday album, ROCKIN' RUDOLPH is out now on Surfdog Records.
When it comes to the Holiday season and Holiday music, THE BRIAN SETZER ORCHESTRA is one of the few modern acts to become firmly solidified with both. The 18-piece big band fronted by the STRAY CATS' guitarslinger has been rockin' and swingin' for nearly a quarter-century on its own, but its association with the festive season happened purely by chance - brought about by filmmaker Brian Levant inviting Setzer to pen some tracks for his 1996 movie, JINGLE ALL THE WAY (coincidentally, my favorite Holiday film of all-time). The full story of how The BSO's "Christmas concept" evolved was eloquently detailed by Dave Kaplan in the liner notes for 2010's CHRISTMAS COMES ALIVE! album, but that story has continued. With a new record called ROCKIN' RUDOLPH out now on Surfdog Records, The BSO is back on the road for their 12th Annual Christmas Rocks! Tour - a 31-City Christmas extravaganza to close out 2015...
Brian Setzer is one of my favorite guitarists and performers of all-time, his extensive discography well-worn here at Rock Father HQ. Of his many projects, THE BRIAN SETZER ORCHESTRA has long-been a favorite, and with my penchant for holiday music also deep-rooted, their Christmas albums and occasional tours have also been a big deal. It was recently announced that The BSO would release their first studio Christmas album in a decade on October 16th (via Surfdog Records), with ROCKIN' RUDOLPH currently up for pre-order via PledgeMusic. Now comes word that the band is hitting the road, and their 12th Annual CHRISTMAS ROCKS! Tour is hitting 31 cities this Holiday Season!
The weather here in Northern Illinois is unseasonably warm today. As the temperature neared 70 degrees this afternoon, our family worked to put up the outside Christmas lights while thinking about the road ahead. With the Holiday Season in full-effect, we'll be putting a lot of miles on the car as we catch up with family members that are scattered. Being "The Rock Father," the folks at Kia Motors asked if I had any suggestions for some songs well-suited for a Rockin' Holiday Road Trip Playlist, and I certainly do. Below you'll find ten great seasonal songs (in no particular order) to be played as a part of your Holiday Road Trip Playlist.
This past June, THE BRIAN SETZER ORCHESTRA headlined the opening of the 2010 Montreal Jazz Festival. Having played the fest before, their energetic stage show had become legendary, and the buzz surrounding their return to the fest was made crystal clear by the turnout. Over 150,000 music fans took to the streets of Montreal, packing several blocks surrounding the stage, all hoping to catch a glimpse of Brian and his rockin' big band.
Earlier this summer, Surfdog Records made the announcement that they'd begun raiding the archives for some new releases of Brian Setzer live recordings - "some new, some old." While live material from Setzer, his Orchestra, and Stray Cats has been released with relative frequency in the past, artists ranging from The Dave Matthews Band, to Metallica, Pearl Jam, and The Grateful Dead have proven that there's an exceptional market out there for high-quality live recordings to be consumed by the most devoted of listeners on a regular basis.
