Quantcast

There's a lot of bands that never get their proper due, and it seems that I tend to find myself a fan of many of them - bands that sometimes disappear for a bit, and then return. HELMET, FAITH NO MORE, PRONG - all of those fit that bill, and now we can add CANDIRIA to that mix. A genre-bending Brooklyn band that melded metal, jazz, funk - even hip-hop elements into their sonic mix, it was a horrific van crash that changed everything. Now, they've signed to Metal Blade Records and will release their first album since 2009 next year.

PEANUTS Brand AmbassadorWith Blue Sky Studios and 20th Century Fox releasing THE PEANUTS MOVIE on November 6, generations of fans both old and new are discovering the adventures of a boy named Charlie Brown. Those adventures with Snoopy, Linus and Lucy, Pig Pen, Peppermint Patty, Schroeder, The Little Red-Haired Girl and more are timeless, and I'm in the crowd that holds sincere hope that Steve Martino will have crafted a worthy companion when his film arrives in theaters. For THE PEANUTS MOVIE, it's composer Christophe Beck (ANT-MAN, FROZEN) that has some big shoes to fill - those once occupied by the Vince Guaraldi Trio. It was Guaraldi's music that became just as iconic as the creations of Charles M. Schulz, and for many (likely myself included), a first introduction to jazz. On July 31, Concord Music Group will release a new collection under the Fantasy label - PEANUTS GREATEST HITS. Featuring a dozen classic songs and all-new liner notes by Derrick Bang (author of the career-spanning book, VINCE GUARALDI AT THE PIANO), Concord Music Group and THE ROCK FATHER Magazine are pleased to give readers a chance at winning one of five (5) copies of the album on CD!

There's a lot of different flavors coming forth in the family music realm this days, and it's those genre shifts that tend to make the Kindie world a little more interesting. I really dug JAZZY ASH's HOME last year, and now she's gearing-up to release another set of New Orleans-inspired goodness with the release of BON VOYAGE this July. The first single is out now, and it's a cover of "Heebie Jeebies," the LOUIS ARMSTRONG classic that is widely credited as "the birth of vocal scatting." Check out the video below, and if you dig it, head over to PledgeMusic to pre-order a copy of the new record.

31 Days of Halloween: JAZZY ASH - "Monsters"

Way back in February, I'd already locked-down an entry for 2014's 31 Days of Halloween here on THE ROCK FATHER when I reviewed HOME, the latest album from JAZZY ASH. "Monsters" follows the New Orleans flavor of HOME, presenting a playful take on what exactly "monsters" are. Is that a zombie, or just a shadow? Is that some sinister creature in the corner, or just a pile of laundry? Is that the demon tree from POLTERGEIST outside? Nope, just your neighbor's weeping willow. Stream the track below, or grab it on iTunes as a fine addition to your 2014 Halloween Music Playlist!

As I sit here at 11:50pm on a Tuesday night, typing this from my office at Rock Father HQ, I look outside at the falling snow and can only wish for Spring. Knowing that it's coming, it's pleasant news to hear that THE BAD PLUS will release their version of Igor Stravinsky's THE RITE OF SPRING, performed as only THE BAD PLUS can - as an ambitious piano/bass/drums trio. Personally, I can't wait to hear what they do with it. Check out the cover art and tracklisting below...

Review: JAZZY ASH - "HOME"

Hailing from Orange County, California "by way of New Orleans," it's no surprise that JAZZY ASH has crafted a new album steeped in the musical heritage of her southern roots. With the release of HOME, Miss Ashli has evolved a bit since I first posted about her "Leaping Lizards Music" program here on The Rock Father nearly a year ago, assembling what stands out in the Kindie realm as what's almost certainly the first (and only) NOLA-style jazz band geared toward kids and families. And it's really well-done, with each member of the six-piece band also serving as a music educator.
