When it was announced earlier this year that MEGA Brands had entered into a partnership with Mattel for some Hot Wheels-branded building sets, the Rock Father Radar immediately lit-up with some new rides planted firmly upon it. Now, just in time for Fall, the new line of MEGA BLOKS Hot Wheels is hitting stores, and within the assortment is the SUPER BLITZEN MONSTER TRUCK Set. The folks at MEGA Bloks had one delivered to Rock Father HQ for evaluation in our State-of-the-Art Toy Testing Facility (our house), and this is how it fared...
This 87-piece "3-in-1" set contains all the goods you need to build one of three variations on the Super Blitzen - a style of car previously-issued in diecast form as a part of the Hot Wheels mainline. There's the recognizable Super Blitzen... an open-top hot rod version... and the Monster Truck variation. Following the included instructions, little Addie and I spent part of an afternoon building and rebuilding our Super Blitzen into all three configurations, the most popular of which was the Monster Truck by far.
BUILD 1: Super Blitzen --
BUILD 2: Super Blitzen Monster Truck --
What's interesting here is that a "Motorized" element comes into play, and as a parent - I appreciate the fact that they've made it a pull-back action instead of requiring batteries. Quick, easy, and fun with no waste. The motorized chassis that comes with the Super Blitzen actually works with other MEGA Bloks Hot Wheels sets, allowing other vehicles to become "monster" as well. Check out some video of our truck in action...
Build 3: Super Blitzen Open Top Edition --
The third build was interesting as it required nearly 100% disassembly to create an open-top hot rod version of the Super Blitzen. Addie and I both appreciate the articulation of the included Team Hot Wheels Team Yellow Monster Truck Driver. As with every building set we do, Addie made a point to assemble "the little guy" first - before anything else gets assembled. I guess it's tradition at this point.
Overall, the MEGA Bloks Hot Wheels Super Blitzen Monster Truck set is a fine first entry for us into this line, and we're already eyeing the iconic Bone Shaker or the Urban Agent Stunt Rig for possible future builds.
