This is a month of milestones here at Rock Father HQ. Not only will The Rock Father website officially turn two on Father's Day, but the day before that - my youngest daughter, Finley, will turn one. Being a big month for Dads as a whole, the folks at Lake County Magazine (which covers life here in the far Northern Suburbs of Chicago) have published a "Men's Edition" to follow-up the Mom-centric issue they put out last month. The cover story? Stay-At-Home Dads... and I'm one of three featured.
I was just a month out from my seventh birthday when HUEY LEWIS & THE NEWS released their album, SPORTS in September of 1983. As a kid growing up on this new thing called "MTV" (Music Television), a cable network that had just hit the two-year mark a month prior, Huey Lewis & The News became my first rock band. At the same time my young mind was absorbing the sonic stylings and visual accompaniments of artists like Michael Jackson and Duran Duran, Lewis and his crew became my gateway drug into a larger world filled with "The Heart of Rock & Roll" - guitar, drums, bass...
HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY!
As The Rock Father, it's my wife... the mother of my two daughters... that is truly the backbone of this family. I've noted this before, but I could never do what she does. She works full-time outside of the home to support our lifestyle, to provide for our children, and to support my crazy adventures. She's a great Mom, and while our little ones might not fully appreciate just how much she does (yet), the smiles on their faces each night solidify the fact that all is right.
Since it's May, that means it's officially PROM SEASON. As a parent, I figure I've got roughly 12-13 years before I get to worry about help my girls get ready for prom, but I know that a lot of you are in the process of getting your kids (Girls and Guys) ready right now. The folks at ACUVUE and THE ROCK FATHER want to help, and together we're offering parents with vision-corrected children a chance to score a one-year supply of 1-DAY ACUVUE® MOIST® Brand Contact Lenses, and a pretty sweet collection of grooming materials for the big day. As we were getting this all together, something hit me: My first prom was 20 years ago this month... May of 1993. Storytime, kiddies...
On Friday night, I took the girls on a special adventure... an adventure that was really for Addie since Finn is only 10 months old. We hopped in the car late that afternoon and went to meet up with my wife at her office. While it was exciting to surprise her as she spotted us in the parking lot, the real surprise was waiting in Elmhurst, Illinois... a Chicago suburb that should be about an hour from Rock Father HQ, but thanks to Friday "rush-hour" took about two to reach. I kept the little one guessing the whole way there... "Where are we going for our special adventure, Daddy?" And then we arrived at the Elmhurst YMCA.
What a week. Aside from the National and International Chaos that occurred over the past several days, we had a scary experience on Thursday afternoon. The girls and I witnessed a car crash. To be more specific, a semi-truck Vs. a small car.
