As I decided to resurrect my old "Random Rock" Column this week, I started looking at the news in my inbox and having flashbacks to a pre-email era. MELVINS... ALICE IN CHAINS... HARVEY DANGER... REVEREND HORTON HEAT? Was it 1997 again? I say that in jest, of course, since I love all of those bands.
Below, you'll find rapid-fire updates on those artists and more, right here on THE ROCK FATHER.
TOMAHAWK, the band featuring Mike Patton (FAITH NO MORE, FANTOMAS, MR. BUNGLE, a bunch of other cool bands), Duane Denison (JESUS LIZARD), John Stainer (ex-HELMET, BATTLES), and Trevor Dunn (MELVINS LITE, MR. BUNGLE, FANTOMAS) have set free the first sample of their forthcoming album, ODDFELLOWS (out January 29, 2013 via Ipecac).
It's not the thunderous twin-drummer assault that the MELVINS have been bringing for the past few years, but MELVINS LITE (Guitarist Buzz Osborne, Drummer Dale Crover, Bassist Trevor Dunn) 's FREAK PUKE is still an ample slice of noise from a band who, regardless of configuration, still bring the rock.
It's time for another installment of The Random Rock N' More - the column where the ''...For Grown-ups'' section of The Rock Father get's homepage placement. Below the break you'll find rapid-fire updates on over 25 bands and artists - that aren't neccessarily 'family friendly.' Check out these bite-sized nuggets of knowledge and hit the enclosed links for more. This marks a trial of a more colorful version of The Random Rock, adding some visual enhancements (one album cover) instead of a plain list. BTW - When I say 'Random Rock' - that means you're getting metal, radio rock, thrash, punk, mainstream, black metal, indie, all corners of rock. Let's do this!
The MELVINS have partnered with Scion A/V Metal for a FREE original EP entitled THE BULLS & THE BEES. The band's first new music since 2010's THE BRIDE SCREAMED MURDER can be downloaded (in exchange for an email) via the TopSpin widget below. Since I love MELVINS and have a Scion XB (with a million miles on it and in need of constant repair lately), I feel good about sharing this here on The Rock Father™.
Generally when I do The Toddler Jukebox, it's about my daughter randomly pulling a CD from the archives and me being forced to spin it. This one's a little different in that the little one didn't specifically choose the song - but she sure as hell digs it. From the MELVINS' 1994 album STONER WITCH comes a little song called Revolve - a song that she happened to catch me playing acoustically yesterday morning while jamming in my office. Yes, I was rocking out some Melvins in a half-assed style when she walked into the room smiling and dancing. So I let her hear the real version of the song.
